Tech Rewrites Record Book in Bowl Win

LUBBOCK, Texas - Led by Sonny Cumbie's career-high 520 passing yards, the Red Raiders established nearly a dozen school bowl records and tied five others in Tech's 45-31 win over fourth-ranked California in the 2004 Pacific Life Holiday Bowl last Thursday in San Diego.

Cumbie's passing yardage total also breaks the previous Tech bowl record of 497, set by B.J. Symons in the 2003 Houston Bowl. He also set a Tech bowl record with 60 pass attempts, which doubles as a Holiday Bowl record.

Sophomore P Alex Reyes set a record with 46.0 yards per punt, breaking the old mark of 45.8, established by Brian Hernandez against Iowa in the 1996 Alamo Bowl. Senior KR Johnnie Mack recorded the longest return in Tech bowl history with a 29-yard runback. The old mark of 25 yards was set by Ronald Ferguson in the 1989 All-American Bowl against Duke.

Additionally, Tech's third-consecutive bowl win marks the first time in school history that Tech has won three bowl games in as many years. The win also gave the program its third-straight season with at least eight wins for the first time in school history.
