Three Red Raiders Qualify for Nationals

Lubbock, Texas - The Texas Tech cross country teams competed in the NCAA Mountain Regional Championships in Provo, Utah, this morning. The Tech men finished in 13th place as a team while the women finished in eighth place.
Irene Kimaiyo was the top finisher for the women who improved two places from 2004's 10th-place team finish. She placed sixth with a clocking of 21:21.1 in the 6K race and automatically qualified for the National Championships. Second for Tech was Violet Chemakwila who clocked a time of 21:45.6, good for a 13th-place finish. Rounding out the top three was Jessica Stovall with a time of 22:53.6 and a placing of 42nd. Violet Chemakwila recieved an automatic bid after the at-large teams were chosen.
On the men's side, Kevin Chelimo earned a trip to the National meet with his sixth-place finish and time of 30:48.4 in the 10K race. Second for the Red Raiders was Benson Cheserek with a time of 32:29.1 and a 46th-place finish. Rounding out the top three for the Red and Black was Pedro Vargas with a clocking of 34:01.9, good for a 84th-place finish. The men's squad matched last season's team finish of 13th.
"Today was a great day for both squads," said head coach Jon Murray. "It's great to see Kevin and Irene earn a trip to Nationals. Their hard work has paid off. Violet also has a great chance to qualify for Nationals after the at-large bids are chosen. Today was great for Texas Tech cross country."
