LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's golf team stands in a tie for 12th after the first round at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational. Senior Kim Kolb carded a 76 round to lead the Lady Raiders with a tie for 12th-place outing.
Tech struggled through the first round of play with only one Lady Raider within four-strokes of pair. Kolb is also the only Lady Raider who shot in the 70's through the first day of competition. Overall the entire individual field struggled through the first round with only 17 players out of 99 firing 76 or below.
In a tie for 57th is junior Hazel Tan who posted an 82 round to open the invitational. Following the junior are senior Megan Hull boasting an 83 first round, freshman Valerie Tan with an 84 performance and senior Sheila Mendez shooting an 89. Competing as an individual is junior Ashley Slavich who turned in a first-round 80 for the Red and Black.
Leading the team leaderboard is Nebraska (302) in first, followed by Duke (307) in second. Rounding out the top five are Arkansas (309-third), Oklahoma State (310-fourth) and Tulsa (311) in fifth.
The three-day event will continue tomorrow with 18 holes at the University of Texas Golf Club. The 54-hole event will wrap up on Sun., March 13.
