Women's Tennis Captures Win On The Road

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team beat Southern Mississippi, 5-2, at the University Park Tennis Courts in Miami, Fla. The Lady Raiders are now 3-6 on the spring season.
The Lady Raiders swept the doubles matches. Janet Durham and Cigdem Duru teamed up at the number one spot to defeat Nicola Slater and Grace Kammerer, 8-6. In the second slot, Tara Browning and Lakann Wagley beat Nikhila Narra and Sherry Price, 8-2. Jennifer Sibille and Ali Blackett fell to Erin Hunter and Katja Kovacic in the last spot, 8-5.
In singles action, Tech captured four of the six wins. Janet Durham defeated Nikhila Narra at number three, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. In the fourth position, Lakann Wagley beat Grace Kammerer, 6-2, 6-4. Katja Kovacic came out on top against Ali Blackett, 7-5, 6-3 in the fifth spot and Erin Hunter handled Courtney Ulrich, 6-0, 6-1 in the last position. In the first spot, Tara Browning fell to Nicola Slater, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Cigdem Duru lost to Sherry Price at number two, 6-2, 6-3.
"We played very well today," said head coach Cari Groce. "Our young players stepped up this morning. Katja Kovacic fought hard and showed tremendous leadership that gave the team momentum."
The Lady Raiders will face Florida Atlantic at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the University Park Tennis Courts in Miami, Fla.
