Women's Tennis Dominates At Home

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team took advantage of playing on their home court today. The Lady Raiders swept Iowa State Cyclones, 7-0. Tech is now 4-7 on it's spring season and 1-1 for Big 12 conference.
The Lady Raiders teamed up to defeat Iowa State in all three positions. At position one, Tara Browning and Lakann Wagley handled Jill Palen and Beth Chermel, 8-0. Cigdem Duru and Janet Durham teamed up in the number two slot to beat Chrissy Derouin and Danielle Uscinski, 8-4. In the last whole, Erin Hunter and Katja Kovacic beat Caitlin Loprinzi and Charlotte Ljungkrantz, 8-4.
Tech dominated in singles action, winning all seven of it's matches. At number one, Cigdem Duru beat Jill Palen, 7-5, 6-4. Janet Durham came out on top in the second position against Danielle Uscinksi, 6-1, 6-2. Tara Browning stood out at number three, defeating Beth Chermel, 7-5, 6-0. In fourth, Erin Hunter won against Caitlin Loprinzi, 6-4, 6-4 and at number five, Katja Kovacic fought until the end, defeating Chrissy Derouin, 7-5, 6-7, 10-7. In the last slot, Lakann Wagley defeated Charlotte Ljungkrantz, 6-0, 6-4.
"What a difference playing at home makes," stated head coach Cari Groce. "The support from our crowd was great. You could tell our players were comfortable. I was very pleased with the way we played today. Being at home allowed us to bring out the best. We hope to come out with two more wins with two more tough matches this weekend. (Janet) Durham stood up today and played very well. Our younger players are really starting to step up. We fell behind earlier on across the boards and everyone really fought back to get wins."
The Lady Raiders will continue Big 12 action at home tomorrow, Sat., March 26, at 10:00 a.m. In case of bad weather, the match will move to 12:00 p.m. at the Lubbock Country Club. Tech will face No. 32 Nebraska tomorrow and No. 50 Missouri Sun., March 27, at 12:00 p.m.
