LUBBOCK, Texas - Polk Robison, the former student-athlete, coach, and administrator will be honored at halftime of the Texas Tech men's basketball game on Saturday, March 5 at the United Spirit Arena.
Robison coached at Texas Tech from 1942-46 and again from 1947-1961. He compiled a 248-195 record. He is second all-time in victories. Gerald Myers, who played for Robison, is first with 326 career victories.
Head coach Bob Knight and athletics director Gerald Myers paid an earlier tribute to Robison at the Tip-off Luncheon in mid-November when he was given a framed Tech jersey with an inscription that thanked him for his many contributions to the university.
A graduate of the class of 1934, Polk spent seven years coaching high school basketball before becoming head basketball coach at Texas Tech in 1942. He was athletic director from 1961-71, then athletic administrator of finance and development until he retired in 1977.
He received the Ex-Student's Association Distinguished Service Award in 1977 and the Order of the Golden Double T, presented for 50 years of loyalty and counsel. He is a member of Tech's Athletic Hall of Honor, the Red Raider Club and the Century Club.
Robison started at Texas Tech as a freshman in 1929, Tech's fifth year of existence. At the time, the campus consisted of an addition to the administration building, an agriculture building, an engineering building and a home economics building.
Saturday afternoon, he will be honored for his distinguished service and contributions to the university.
