LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's golf team shot the second-lowest score of a 309 in the third round to secure its fifth-place finish at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman, Okla., today. Tech's Kim Kolb and Megan Hull who finished in eighth and a tied for 10th place, respectively, proved to be the needed leadership that pulled Tech through a tough course.
With rainy weather threatening to cut short the tournament, the Lady Raiders found a way to adjust to the course throughout the tournament which proved beneficial for Tech's second-straight top-five finish of the spring.
"The course played totally different on the second day," said Head Coach Stacey Totman, "but the girls were able to adjust and shoot one of the lowest scores in the third round by any team in the tournament."
Seniors Kolb (75-70-80-225) and Hull (73-77-77-227) led the way for the Red and Black placing within the top ten. Rounding out Tech's competitors were sophomore Marla Troester (81-78-77-236, t33rd), senior Sheila Mendez (78-88-89-245, t57th) and freshman Valerie Tan (82-88-76-246, t59th).
Competing as an individual was junior Hazel Tan (78-76-86-240) who finished tied for 43rd.
Taking the team title was No.16 Missouri (298-290-301-889) followed by No.25 Tulsa (298-300-301-899) in second. Both Missouri and Tulsa's 301 third rounds were the only scores that beat the Lady Raider's 309 in the third. The next closest competitor's score was a 311.
Rounding out the top-five teams was No.34 Baylor (296-301-317-914) in third, No.28 SMU (299-303-317-919) in fourth and Tech (307-313-309-929) in fifth.
The Lady Raiders will be back in action April 22-24 at the Big 12 Championships being hosted by the University of Texas. The event will take place in Austin featuring some of the nation's best golf programs.
Tech will use its finish at the Big 12 Championships to help solidify its position in the post season. The Red and Black hope to be able to take part in the central regional as The Rawls Course will play host to the event May 5-7.
