Lubbock, Texas - The Red Raider basketball program will welcome an incoming freshman and a former junior college player for the 2005 academic year as a result of their National Letter of Intent signings today.
Alan Voskuil, a 6-foot-3, 175-pound, guard from L. D. Bell High School in Hurst, Texas will join the Red Raiders as a freshman. Alan was named to the All-District First Team and to the Class 5A All-Region team at the conclusion of his senior season.
As a junior for the Bell Blue Raiders, he was named the District Newcomer of the Year after his family moved from Rocky Mount, North Carolina to Bedford, Texas. As a senior, he averaged 18.7 points per game and shot 42 percent from three-point range. Coached by Randall Durant, the Bell Blue Raiders were 24-9 for the season and were ranked in the TABC top-twenty for the first time in over a decade.
The second signee, Jonathan Plefka, a 6-foot-9, 235 pound, forward played his sophomore year at Sante Fe Community College in Palatka, Florida and will have two years of eligibility remaining as he joins the Red Raiders.
The New Britain, Connecticut native averaged 9.2 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per contest while playing nearly 20 minutes per game on a team which finished the season at
25-4 and were ranked as high as fourth in the nation.
In 2003, he played one season of baseball at the University of Vermont and in 2002, he played one season of basketball at James Madison University.
"We think these incoming players will be a great addition to Texas Tech basketball," noted Bob Knight whose 854 career victories make him the winningest active Division One coach and second among all coaches behind Dean Smith.
Texas Tech, 22-11 for the 2004-2005 season, completed their fourth consecutive twenty-win season, a first in school history. The Red Raiders were fourth in conference play, were second in the conference tournament, and then downed UCLA and Gonzaga in the First and Second Rounds of the NCAA Tournament in Tucson, Arizona. The Raiders lost to WV in the "Sweet Sixteen" 65-60 at The Pit in Albuquerque.
