LUBBOCK, Texas - Despite 513 passing yards from Texas Tech's quarterbacks in the annual Red-Black Game on Saturday, the running game provided two of the day's three touchdowns, as a mixture of first, second and third-team players posted 24 points on the afternoon. Senior quarterback Cody Hodges threw for 237 yards on 20-of-26 passing to lead the offense.
"I thought we had a good day of work," Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach said. "I thought we executed real well, but we definitely need to improve on some things on both sides of the ball. We need to develop more consistency. We were able to get contribution from a lot of people and we did a good job of playing together."
The Red Raider defense turned in a solid effort as well, picking off Tech's quarterbacks twice and posting five sacks. Junior Keyunta Dawson, who has the task of filling the shoes of former Tech defensive end Adell Duckett, finished the scrimmage with two sacks for 19 lost yards. Strong safety Vincent Meeks picked junior Phillip Daugherty's pass and returned it 35 yards, while senior linebacker Sylvester Brinkley picked a second Daugherty pass.
Despite the two interceptions, Daugherty turned in respectable numbers, completing 15-of-23 passes for 138 yards. Walk-on quarterback Ryan Rowland saw increased time with the injury to Graham Harrell and finished the afternoon with 138 yards and a touchdown on 16-of-22 passing. Rowland hit redshirt freshman inside receiver Eric Morris on a four-yard strike in the fourth quarter for the only passing touchdown of the game.
Senior running back Taurean Henderson and redshirt freshman back Shannon Woods scored the game's two rushing scores on runs of three yards each in the second quarter. Henderson averaged five yards per rush on five carries, while Woods totaled 23 yards in six attempts.
Sophomore inside receiver Danny Amendola led all receivers with 85 yards, while he joined two others with six receptions apiece. Junior wide receiver Jarrett Hicks and redshirt freshman wide receiver Anthony Jenkins followed with 74 and 70 yards, respectively.
Junior cornerback Clifton Eddington led the defense with eight tackles, while senior corner SirDon Lewis and redshirt freshman safety Anthony Hines added seven each. In addition to Dawson's sacks, senior rush end Brett Bischofberger, senior defensive tackle Charles Glover and redshirt freshman Jared Williams each recorded sacks. Williams made the move from offensive tackle to defensive end at the beginning of spring practice in March.
Sophomore placekicker Alex Trlica provided the first score of the game on a 32-yard field goal in the first quarter. Junior punter Alex Reyes punted once for 48 yards.
The estimated attendance for the spring game was 8,600, setting a record for the annual event.
The Red Raiders wrap up spring practice Mon., April 18, with a 3:15 p.m. workout.
