LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 48 Texas Tech women's golf team shot a first-round 301 to finish in a tie for 13th at the 2005 NCAA Women's Golf Central Regional today at The Rawls Course. Tech's sophomore Marla Troester, junior Hazel Tan and senior Megan Hull led the way for the Lady Raiders finishing three-over-par, 75.
The event got a late start as the first tee-off times were pushed back an hour due to a fog delay. The first tee off began at 8:30 a.m. at both the first and 10th hole.
While Tech sits in a tie for 13th after day one, the Lady Raiders are still in the hunt for the school's second NCAA Championship appearance sitting just three strokes out of the top eight.
Tech's Troester played one-over throughout most of the tournament. Troester then shot a double-bogey at the 14th hole to move three-over on the day. Troester held her own through the rest of the back nine to finish tied for 39th.
Tan had a solid day carding two bogeys in the first nine and only one bogey as she brought it home through the back nine. Tan joins her teammate in a tie for 39th to enter the second round.
Senior Megan Hull turned in a birdie at hole 18 to move back into the hunt with a three-over 75 for the first round. Hull ended the day along with her teammates in a tie for 39th.
Senior Kim Kolb started strong through the first set of links at even par. It would be the second group of nine that would pose trouble for the senior who posted two-straight bogeys to open up the back-end of the course. Kolb followed that with two bogeys at holes 14 and 16 to finish four-over 76, tied for 50th for the round.
Tech's final competitor in Sheila Mendez, who finished 10-over-par 82, ended the round tied for 99th.
The 22nd-ranked University of Texas Longhorns shot the lowest score of the round of a 290 to lead all teams at the event. Leading the individuals is Auburn's Diana Ramage who shot a four-under 68, to be one of only seven individuals to finish under-par. The next closest score was by UT's Lisa Ferrero and Texas A&M's Christa Spedding who both carded two-under-par performances. Ferrero and Spedding ended the round tied for second.
The Big 12 Conference had a strong showing with three out of the top-five teams on the leader board hailing from the Conference. Rounding out the top eight teams were No. 15 Missouri (291) and the University of New Mexico (291) tied for second. Filling the three through eight spots is No. 37 Texas A&M (293), No. 6 Auburn (294), No. 35 Purdue (295), No. 4 Arizona State (296) and No. 10 LSU and No. 21 Tulsa tied for eighth with a score of 299.
The 2005 NCAA Central Regional will get underway tomorrow with a 7:30 a.m. tee time set at holes one and 10. The final round will conclude on Saturday with the top eight teams advancing, as well as the top two-individuals not on the top eight teams also securing a spot in the Championships.
There will be no ties at the Regionals, with all being decided in the third round through playoffs.
