Volleyball Set for Friday Night Scrimmage

Lubbock, Texas- Red Raider volleyball will be hosting an intra-squad scrimmage on Fri., Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. in the practice gym at the United Spirit Arena.
Six newcomers will be joining nine returnees for the first test of the 2005 season. Head coach Nancy Todd has brought in three freshman and three junior transfers.
Top returnees from the 2004 season include seniors Desiree Batista and Brianna Florus. Batista and Florus are beginning their second season as Red Raiders but had an immediate impact on the program in 2004 as junior transfers. Batista holds the four-game record for service aces with six against San Diego State. The Brazil native also ranks fourth all-time for service aces in a season with 52.
Florus, a native of Flatonia, Texas, also stamped her mark on the record books. She ranks 11th all-time for block assists in a season with 102. She is also seated at 10th in the single match records for total blocks with 10 against Baylor.
Texas Tech will open the 2005 season at the University of Houston Tournament with matches against Wichita State and Houston. The Red Raiders will then travel to Dallas for the SMU Tournament where they will face Oral Roberts, Stony Brook and SMU. After a single road match against Rice, Tech volleyball will return to Lubbock to host the Red Raider Round-Up. Participating in the event will be Georgia, Boise State and San Diego State.
