LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior forward Kimmie Davis notched her first goal of the season, but it was no enough to lift Texas Tech soccer to a victory on Sunday as they fell to SMU, 3-1, in front of 650 fans at R.P. Fuller Stadium.
Both the Red Raiders and Mustangs collected five shots in a hard-fought first half, but neither team was able to tally the opening goal, sending the game to halftime scoreless. The game's two goalkeepers, Tech's Megan Knauss and SMU's Ashley Gunter, were active in the period as each player collected two saves. Knauss finished the game with four saves.
In the second period, the Mustangs (1-1) were able to net the game's first score as midfielder Carley Phillips connected on a header, which sailed just over the outstretched arms of Knauss. Less than three minutes later, SMU extended its lead as forward Krystal Bailey snuck in behind the Tech defenders and broke in alone on Knauss to register her first goal of the season.
The Red Raiders battled back in the match as in the 79th minute sophomore midfielder Lauren Lothrop connected on a long pass to Davis, who converted a low shot for the first Tech goal of the season, cutting the SMU advantage to 2-1.
At the 82:18 mark, the Mustangs took the final 3-1 lead as midfielder Kirsten Moran received a pass from Gillian Field and netted the game's final goal.
For the game, Tech held a 15-12 advantage in shots and was led by sophomore forward Kim Cypert, who tallied a team-high three shots.
The Red Raiders (0-2) are back in action on Tuesday, when they travel to Huntsville, Texas, to battle Sam Houston State. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
Next weekend, Texas Tech will host special guest, Olympian Heather Mitts. Fans will have the opportunity to share dinner with Mitts on Saturday evening and participate in a clinic led by Mitts and the Red Raiders after Sunday's match between Tech and Minnesota.
