HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Senior forward Kimmie Davis tallied two goals and added an assist as the Texas Tech women's soccer team collected its first win under head coach Neil McGuire as the Red Raiders defeated Sam Houston State in overtime by a score of 3-2.
The Red Raiders fell behind early in the match as the Bearkats tallied the game's first goal in the 26th minute. Davis was able to tie the game just over a minute later at the 26:23 mark sending the game to halftime tied at one. Tech owned a 12-4 advantage in shots during the period.
During the second period, SHSU's Mary MacGregor notched her second goal of the game to put the Bearkats ahead for the second time in the match. The Red Raiders would respond in the game's 86th minute as junior defender Meghan Blume found Davis, who converted on her second goal to force the game into overtime.
In the extra frame, freshman Chessa Purser clinched the victory at the 93:42 mark as she received a pass from Davis and tallied her first collegiate goal.
"This was not a game where we executed our game plan very well," said McGuire. "Credit has to go to every individual on our team for bearing down and being able to grind out a victory."
The Red Raiders are back in action this weekend as they participate in the Big 12/Big Ten Challenge. On Friday, Tech will welcome the Northwestern Wildcats to Lubbock in a 7 p.m. match at R.P.
