Lubbock, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team will host the Kansas Jayhawks, on Wed., Sept. 28, at 7 p.m., at the United Spirit Arena. The Red Raiders at 7-5 and 1-2 in Big 12 play on the season.
Tech had an unexpected off weekend this week, with their match against Texas A&M being postponed. One week ago, the Red Raiders swept Oklahoma, 3-0, for their first Big 12 victory.
The Red Raiders secured the match victory with 30-27, 30-26 and 30-21 wins over the Crimson and Cream. Philister Sang ended the match with 12 kills and 10 digs; her sixth double-double of the season. Amy Charlebois was just short of double-digit kills with nine. Desiree Batista anchored the defense with 14 digs. Brianna Florus led the way for the front line with four block assists. Emily Ziegler served as the primary setter and added 24 assists to her season total.
The Jayhawks are fresh off a 3-0 sweep of Baylor. They are sitting at 11-2 on the season and 3-1 in conference play with their lone Big 12 loss coming at the hands of Texas, 3-2. Kansas was picked to finish fifth in the conference after finishing in a tie for sixth during the 2004 season.
At the last meeting between the two teams, then-senior Kelly Johnson shouldered the Red Raider offense with 14 kills in Tech's 3-0 loss to the Kansas Jayhawks. The Texas Tech volleyball team was unable to overcome the offensive efficiency from the middle by KU, who had 25 kills from the middle blocker position on the night.
The defensive effort by the Jayhawks proved too much for the Red and Black as Kansas posted 61 digs in the contest to Tech's 57. KU also pounded down 49 kills to edge out Tech (46 kills) by three.
While the Jayhawks did not dominate the stats sheet, with both teams almost mirroring each other in totals, Kansas (13 blocks, 5 aces) held a slight edge over Tech (12 blocks, 3 aces) throughout the match on the scoreboard. Tech's downfall came at the net, as it struggled from the front row to put the ball down posting 28 errors to Kansas' 17.
First serve is slated for 7 p.m. Live stats can be found at www.texastech.com.
