Volleyball Debuts at Red Raider Round Up

Lubbock, Texas- The Texas Tech volleyball team will debut at the United Spirit Arena at the Red Raider Round Up this weekend. The team sits at 4-2 on the season and will challenge it's four-match win streak against San Diego State (Fri., Sept. 9, 11 a.m.), Georgia (Fri., Sept. 9, 7 p.m.) and Boise State (Sat., Sept. 10, 2 p.m.).
The Red Raiders defeated Rice, 3-2, in Houston on Wednesday. Texas Tech volleyball defeated Rice University, in Houston, 3-2 this evening. The Red Raiders move to 4-2 on the season and ended Rice's 19-match home win streak while improving their own win streak to four.
The offense was once again led by Philister Sang, who posted her second double-double (27 kills, 15 digs) of the season and her career. Kiley Lyons was just short of her second double-double of the season with 17 kills and nine digs. Desiree Batista led the defense with 19 digs. Emily Ziegler and Holly Hicks shared the duties of setter tonight as Hicks notched 24 assists and Ziegler chipped in with 36 assists.
The San Diego State Aztecs went 2-2 at its own Aztec invitational last weekend, defeating Liberty and Southern Illinois on Friday (Sept. 2) and dropping matches to UC Riverside and Creighton on Saturday (Sept. 3). Audra Dent is leading the offense with 36 kills and Aime Cordeiro is anchoring the defense with 61 digs. They will battle Cal State Fullerton, Wed., Sept. 7, at 8 p.m.
Last time out, the Red Raiders came out firing as they defeated San Diego State 3-1, in their season opener on Sept. 4, 2004. Six Red Raiders finished the match with aces, with junior Desiree Batista leading the way with six. Senior Kelly Johnson paved the way with 14 kills, while senior Laura Grote tallied 37 assists. Batista's six aces earned the junior her first Tech record. Her six aces are the most by a Red Raider in a four-game match and ties for fourth in all matches.
Georgia has been picked to finish third in the SEC Eastern Division race in a poll by the league's coaches. The Bulldogs are coming off two straight wins last weekend over Georgia Southern and Grambling. They will host Clemson on Wed., Sept. 7, at 6 p.m. The last meeting between the two teams was a Tech victory, 3-1, on Dec. 7, 1997 in Lubbock.
The Broncos were defeated by Utah Valley State, 3-1, on Tuesday night. Boise State now sits at 1-2 on the season. The 2005 Broncos return two seniors, two juniors and three sophomores from last year's squad who turned the program around with the first winning season since 1998. The Broncos, who finished 2004 with an overall record of 17-12, their best win-loss record since 1998, were picked sixth in the WAC. The last meeting between the two teams was a Tech victory, 3-1, on Nov. 8, 1995 in Houston.
