Polk Secures Trip to Nationals in the Long Jump

Albuquerque, N.M. - Texas Tech senior Tori Polk set a new school record, personal best and NCAA automatic mark in the long jump with a leap of 21'-2.75". She replaces her previous record of 19'-11.5" set on Feb. 25, 2005 at the Big 12 Indoor Championships.
Polk's mark is currently the second-best in the nation and is leading the Big 12 conference. The Hewitt, Texas native was a 2005 Outdoor All-American in the event, finishing in sixth place, and was also honored as an All-American in the indoor and outdoor 4x400M in 2004. Polk finished in fourth place in the long jump at the 2005 Indoor Big 12 Championships.
Senior Michael Mathieu won the 200M with a time of 21.46, also a personal best. Kevin Chelimo won the men's mile with a time of 4:12.39, the second-best mark of his collegiate career.
In the high jump, Misty Coley cleared a provisional qualifying height of 5'-11.25", a new personal best and tied the school record. Lacy Wilson finished in second with a height of 5'-8" and Julianne Kennedy cleared 5'-6", good for a fourth-place finish.
In the women's weight throw, Patience Knight and D'Andra Carter finished in seventh and eighth places, respectively. Knight marked a toss of 49'-8.5, a new personal best. Carter threw for 44'-8.25", also a new personal best. In the women's shot put, Knight finished in second place with a toss of 44'-9.5" and Carter finished in fourth place with a mark of 43'-1".
In the 60M hurdles, Daryl Burgess and Marlon Odom had a 1-2 finish, both clocking a new school record time of 7.94. They replace Shawon Harris' previous record of 7.96 set on Feb. 12, 2005. Harris clocked a 7.99, good for a third-place finish.
In the 60M dash, Melissa Branch finished in third place with a clocking of 7.46. On the men's side, Jansen Hyde finished first among three Tech runners. Hyde clocked a personal best of 7.01, Ryan Varner finished 12th with a 7.13 and Brady Hicks finished 14th with a 7.16.
The women's 4x400M, Patricia Mayers, Louise Cox, Althea Chambers and Tori Polk, clocked a time of 3:43.90, finishing in first place ahead of Florida, who clocked a 3:44.33. The men's 4x400M, Rodney Mims, Andrae Williams, Zach Glavash and Michael Mathieu, ran a 3:10.78, narrowly missing the provisional qualifying mark of 3:10.00.
