Two Golfers Added to Tech Men's Team

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's golf squad has added two members, with one to compete in the spring season, as announced by the men's golf program Thursday. Matt Smith is a mid-season addition and will compete in the spring of 2007 as a freshman. Brian Scherer has signed a National Letter of Intent with Tech and will join the program next fall as a freshman.
Smith, a Canberra, Australia, native, is be expected to make an immediate impact for the Red Raiders this spring. He joins after having an illustrious career in Australian amateur events, including three titles and firing a 70.93 average through 2006. He was named a member of the New South Wales National Golf Team, as well as the Australia Golf Union Elite Squad and Australian Institute of Sport Elite Golf Team.
A Midland, Texas, native, Scherer joins the Tech team after considering Texas and Arkansas. He is the No. 55 prospect in the class of 2007 in the AJGA rankings and 46th according to Golfweek. Scherer accumulated an average of 73.07 through 15 rounds during his AJGA touring in 2006. While touring, he finished in the top 10 three of his five events, including capturing the title at the Fidelity Investments Junior with a final round of 68. He also finished in fifth place at the Fidelity Investments Stars of Texas Junior in August and tied for sixth at the AJGA Randy Smith Classic in June. In 2005, Scherer took the title at the Texas/Oklahoma Junior Championship.
