Lubbock, Texas - Texas Tech track and field assistant coach and Head Olympic strength and conditioning coach Cliff Felkins will be inducted into the Abilene Christian University Hall of Fame on Sat., Feb. 18.
Felkins is in his seventh season at Texas Tech, coaching throwing events for the Red Raiders as well as coordinating the team's strength and conditioning program. Felkins' most recent accomplishments included the All-American status of discus thrower Jason Young. He is also responsible for the hiring of Young as an assistant strength and conditioning coach.
In the summer of 2004, Felkins was named Head Strength Coach for all Olympic Sports at Texas Tech. Felkins oversees the strength and conditioning programs for Red Raider Olympic sports, in addition to his track and field duties.
Felkins is still considered one of the most dominant throwers in the history of NCAA Division II track and field. Felkins was a 1998 inductee into the NCAA Division II Track and Field Hall of Fame.
Although just a Wildcat for two seasons, Felkins certainly made his mark in ACU track and field history, winning five individual national championships, including the 1987 NCAA Division I title in the discus. A two-time Lone Star Conference champion (hammer and discus in 1987), Felkins was a four-time NCAA Division II individual champion (hammer and discus in 1987 and 1988). He was inducted into the NCAA Division II Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1998.
A 1983 graduate of Odessa High School, Felkins was a two-time All-America thrower at Odessa College in the hammer and the discus where he was the national runner-up in both events. Felkins then transferred to the UTEP where he was the Western Athletic Conference champion in the weight throw before again earning All-America status. After UTEP was placed on probation, he then transferred to ACU for his final two years of eligibility. Felkins competed at Olympic trials, Olympic festivals and U.S. National Championships before retiring in 1996. He joined the ACU track and field coaching staff in 1992 and from 1992-99, he coached Wildcat throwers to 36 All-America performances, five national championships, four Olympic Trials and one Olympic team berth.
The Class of 2005-06 will be officially inducted into the hall during the 20th annual Hall of Fame festivities, Feb. 18, 2006, at 11:30 a.m. in the Hilton Room of the McGlothlin Campus Center. Tickets to the luncheon are $15 and can be purchased by calling 325-674-2353. With the addition of the five members of this year's class, the ACU Sports Hall of Fame now includes 117 men and women.
