LUBBOCK, Texas -- Wanting to prove themselves against some of the toughest competition in the country, the Texas Tech softball team will find just that this weekend as they travel to Palm Springs, Calif., to take part in the Palm Springs Classic.
The Red Raiders will take part in a field that features some of the best teams in the nation and will square off against ranked opponents -- No. 1 Arizona, No. 6 Stanford, No. 19 LSU and No. 23 Fresno State. Texas Tech and top-ranked Arizona met in last weekend's Worth Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz., with the Wildcats emerging as 6-0 victors in the contest. Maryland and UNLV are also on the docket for the Red Raiders at the event as they try to improve on their 3-8 record this season.
The Texas Tech offense finally got rolling in Tucson last week. After struggling in the first day of competition, the Red Raiders broke out against then-No. 18 Missouri, piling up 12 hits in the contest, 10 of which went for extra bases. Junior shortstop Heather Parker slammed two home runs in the contest while driving in a team-high four runs. Sister and Tech centerfielder Ashley Parker posted three hits against the Tigers, while sophomore right fielder Whitney Riley collected two doubles.
Senior pitcher Erin Crawford, improved her record to 2-0 this season by picking up the win in the Missouri match up. In the tournament's next contest, Tech sophomore pitcher Sarah Losleben, rebounded from a shaky start to keep the Arizona offense off balance in one of her best performances as a Red Raider. Fans can follow this weekend's action by accessing gametracker on the softball schedule/results page of www.texastech.com. Gametracker should be avaliable for all of Tech's games this weekend except for the LSU matchup.
