Robyn Wike used to have dreams of being a Texas Longhorn. She wanted to be a Longhorn and was heavily leaning toward burnt orange before she met head softball coach Teresa Wilson.
Wilson, then coach of the Washington Huskies, was able to recruit Wike to come play at Washington. According to Wike, she hasn't regretted a minute of it.
"I absolutely love Texas Tech," Wike said. "Coming here has been one of the best experiences ever. I love Tech and I love the comradery here."
Wike said Wilson left a lasting impression on her. She said she was committed to Washington as soon as Wilson left her house. When the opportunity arose for Wike to come to Lubbock, she said Wilson made it very intising.
"Coach said it's going to be different," Wike said. "She sad we would be starting a new program."
"She said it will be something special that you're involved in and that's why I'm here."
Wike said that one of the things she likes about Wilson and her philosophy is her work ethic. Wike said that Wilson works incredibly hard at everything she does. She said people take notice all around the school.
Wike, the starting catcher for the softball team, said she sees herself as a leader on the field and said people expect a lot out of her.
"On the field, I see everything that goes on in every single situation and I do a lot of the talking and communication with everybody else," Wike said. "Outside, people come to me for anything and I tell everyone they can come to me and I'll give you advice."
"Especially coming from a Pac-10 school, I felt like I had to come to Texas Tech and step it up."
The transition from Washington to Lubbock can definitely be challenging for some. However, there's something about the Hub City that Wike expected but has yet to receive.
"I really expected Lubbock to be hot, but Lubbock's not hot," Wike said.
Wike, a girl that loves the outdoors, said the people in Lubbock are much nicer than anywhere. She said it was ridiculous.
Wike, with a huge smile on her face, added that she has received many offers to go hunting and fishing and that she is more than willing to go.
