Today's game marked the 83rd all-time meeting between Texas Tech and New Mexico. The Red Raiders now lead the Lobos 52-30-1 all-time and have now won eight straight games in the series. Tech's last loss against New Mexico was on March 16, 2004 in Albuquerqe (4-1).
Texas Tech plated two runs in the top of the first inning and has now scored in its first at-bat 26 times this season. The Red Raiders are now 16-8 on the season when scoring first.
The Texas Tech offense finished the day with 19 hits and has now produced 10-plus hits in 31 of 49 games this season.
Sophomore Matt Smith made his first appearance in nearly a month on Wednesday afternoon when he joined the Tech lineup as the designated hitter. Smith was injured in a home plate collision with Kansas State's Eli Rumler on April 14th and has been out with a stage two tear of the MCL in his left knee. Smith finished the day 3-for-6 with one run batted in.
Freshman left fielder Roger Kieschnick has now hit safely in 41 of 49 games this season while senior center fielder Brian Capps has hit safely in 36 of 44 games.
Junior catcher Tyler Reves picked up his 10th home run of the season in the top of the fifth inning. He finished the day 3-for-6 and earned his 22nd multiple-hit game of the season.
Senior center fielder Brian Capps picked up his second home run of the season and the fifth of his Tech career. Incidentally, all five of Capps' career home runs have come on the road.
