LUBBOCK, Texas - Former Red Raider pole vaulter Sage Thames was awarded a $7,500 scholarship as announced by the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee. Thames was one of 58 student-athletes (28 male/28 female) who participated in spring sports to have been honored.
To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, at student-athlete must have achieved an overall grade point average of at least a 3.20 and performed on a varsity athletics team. Also taken in consideration is the student-athlete's behavior on and off the field. Nominations were received from athletic representatives around the nation in March, and eventually selected by the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee.
Thames is one of three Big 12 student-athletes to have earned the postgraduate honor. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State were the other two conference schools with a student honored.
Thames finished his senior campaign with an All-American honor at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Championships and with an all-conference performance at the Big 12 Indoor Championships. The accomplishment marked his fifth All-Big 12 honor. He was a member of the 2005 men's outdoor Big 12 Championship Red Raider squad. During the 2004 outdoor season, Thames earned All-American, all-region and all-conference honors in the pole vault. His personal best occurred at the 2004 NCAA Nationals when he cleared a height of 18'-0.5".
