Lubbock, TX - The Texas Tech Red Raiders announced their 2006-2007 non-conference schedule today. The schedule includes eight home games, four away games, and a maximum of three neutral site games. Additionally, the Red Raiders will serve as one of the four regional hosts for the Guardians Classic and will play in the Pete Newell Challenge.
The Raiders open the season against Sam Houston State on Saturday, November 11 at the United Spirit Arena. On November 13 and November 14, Texas Tech will host the first and second rounds of the Guardians Classic. The winners of the four regional brackets will meet in the semi-finals on November 20 in Kansas City, Missouri with the finals played on November 21. The pairings for each regional site (Texas Tech, Duke, Stanford, and Marquette) will be announced when finalized.
The Guardians Classic was created in 2001 as a two-week exempt tournament consisting of four regional sites hosted at campuses across the country. The winner from each regional site advances to the championship round in Kansas City, Missouri. The NCAA awarded the Guardians Classic this special exemption, which allows teams to play in these games in excess of the normal maximum number of contests.
After hosting North Dakota State on November 17, Texas Tech will be on the road to play at UTEP on November 25 and at Louisiana Tech on November 29.
On December 3, Hall of Fame Coach Bob Knight, who is closing in on Dean Smith's record as the winningest coach in college basketball history, will lead the Red Raiders against Stanford in the Pete Newell Challenge at the HP Pavilion. Nevada and Cal will face off in the second game.
The Pete Newell Challenge, which is being played for the first time in San Jose after nine years in Oakland, was created to honor the Hall of Fame coach and teacher who won a coaching "Triple Crown" - an NIT Championship at USF (1949), and an NCAA title at Cal (1959), and an Olympic gold medal for the United States (Rome, 1960).
Texas Tech will play at TCU on December 6 before returning home to host Centenary on December 9. After facing Arkansas in Little Rock on December 16, the Raiders complete the non-conference portion of the 2006-2007 season with three home games...Bucknell on December 23, UNLV on December 28, and New Mexico on January 1, 2007.
