Red Raiders Steal the Show from Host UTEP

EL PASO, Texas - Texas Tech notched its first win of the 2006 season with a 3-2 win over UTEP in the final match of the night for the Ready One Sun Bowl Invitational. After taking the first two games from the Miners, UTEP bounced back taking games three and four. The Red Raiders ran away with the fifth game to bring them to a 1-1 record on the season.
During game one, Tech was the first to score but wasn't able to regain the lead from UTEP until they scored on a Miner error to bring the score to 9-8. The Red Raiders had several runs during the game, which forced the Miners to use two timeouts. Tech went on a 7-1 run to take the game 30-15. The second game involved 12 ties before Tech won with a score of 30-25.
Games three and four belonged to UTEP as they battled back from a 0-2 deficit. In the third game, the Red Raiders and Miners tied on nine occasions before UTEP took the game 31-29. In game four, after a 7-5 UTEP lead, the Miners went on an 8-2 run and never looked back. They cruised to a 30-20 victory to send the match to its final game.
After Tech substitutions in mid-game with a 7-6 lead, the Red Raiders scored six straight to bring the game to 13-6. UTEP would gain one more point on a kill before Tech would steal the game and the match 15-7.
Lindsay Louis and Robyn Bucy led the team in kills with 13 and 11 respectively. Louis tallied her first double-double by adding 18 digs. Holly Hicks led in assists with 27, while Emily Ziegler tallied 24. Three Red Raiders had five or more blocks, with Amy Charlebois rejecting five, Bucy six, and Alicia Ostmeyer leading with eight.
Play in the Sun Bowl tournament continues tomorrow with Tech getting started at 10:30 a.m. CT against the Eagles of Eastern Michigan. The Red Raiders' final match will be at 3:30 p.m. against New Mexico State.
