WACO, Texas - Despite a strong push for their first Big 12 win, Texas Tech fell short with a 3-2 loss to the Baylor Bears in Waco, Texas. The Red Raiders fell in games of 30-28, 23-30, 27-30, 30-17, 13-15. Tech now moves to 7-5 on the season and is currently 0-3 in Big 12 play. With the win, Baylor is now 13-2 and 2-1 Big 12.
During the first game, Baylor made an early push to lead and was up 4-1 to which the Red and Black responded with four-straight points to regain the lead. Baylor controlled much of the game until a 26-25 Tech lead. Red Raider Laura Gottschalk finished the Bears with a kill to take the game 30-28.
In the fourth frame, Tech launched an early lead on Baylor, 12-2, with four Alicia Ostmeyer kills before a Bear timeout. Baylor was never able to regain composure as Tech captured the win in game four by their largest margin of victory since pre-conference play in early September 2005.
In the fifth and deciding game, the Raiders and Bears battled for much of the frame as they each fought for the advantage. The game involved nine ties before Baylor went 3-1 at the end to capture the match with a final game of 15-13.
Leading the Red Raiders were Philister Sang and Kiley Lyons, who each notched a double-double. Sang tallied 28 kills on .236 hitting and added 11 digs and six blocks. Lyons led in digs with 21 and completed her first double-double of the season with 10 kills. Emily Ziegler recorded 54 of Tech's 63 assists, to mark a team individual season high. Amanda Hiller and Lindsey Louis each added double-digit kills with 13 and 10 respectively. Alicia Ostmeyer tallied one solo and five assisted blocks.
The Red Raiders will travel to Lincoln, Neb., on Saturday, Sept. 23, to face the nation's top team, the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The first serve is set for 2 p.m. at the Nebraska Coliseum. For complete coverage, please visit www.texastech.com.
