LUBBOCK, Texas - Coming off of a tournament title at the UTPA Volleyball Invitational, the Red Raiders will be looking to continue their winning ways against Wright State, Jacksonville and South Florida. Texas Tech will travel to Tampa, Fla., for the USF Smoothie King Invitational, which is set to begin on Friday, September 8th. The round-robin tournament will conclude on Saturday, September 9th.
Last week, the Red Raider squad travelled to Edinburg, Texas, to face in-state schools Texas State and UT-Pan American. Tech first took on the Bobcats, who came in with an identical record. The Red Raiders had their first three-game match of the year with a sweep of Texas State. Tech took the match with games of 30-25, 30-27, 30-22.
The Raiders then took on host UTPA, who lost to Texas State the previous day 3-1. Tech rolled to an easy victory over the Lady Broncs, completing a sweep of the tournament with a 3-0 win (30-19, 30-19, 30-24).
The tournament victory came as Tech's first since last year, when the team took the title at the SMU Tournament. Three Red Raiders were named to the all-tournament team. Philister Sang received the most valuable player nomination, while Amy Charlebois and Laura Gottschalk were honored for their performance as well.
Wright State is coming off of a disappointing 0-3 Jefferson Cup Tournament, where the Raiders dropped matches to East Carolina, Georgetown and Virginia. Wright State moved to 1-6 on the season with their lone victory coming against Toledo. Tech is set to match up with Wright State at 4:00 p.m. CT on Friday, September 8th.
On Saturday, Tech opens the day against Jacksonville with an estimated first serve at 9:00 a.m. CT. The Dolphins are coming off of tournament title as well, as they captured the crown to their home tournament, the Crispers Invitational. They defeated Southeast Louisiana (3-2), Georgia Southern (3-1) and Lafayette (3-0). After the tournament, Jacksonville moved to 4-2 on the season.
The final match for Tech will be against host USF with an estimated start of 5 p.m. CT. The Bulls come in with a record of 2-3, with both victories taking place last weekend at their first home tournament, the USF Best Western Invitational. The Bulls posted wins over Illinois-Chicago and UTEP. USF took both victories with a three-game sweep.
