SEATTLE, Wash. - The Red Raider runners hoped to score big at the UW Indoor Invitational and they did so on Saturday with two automatic and one provisional mark. Sally Kipyego earned her second NCAA automatic time, running the 3000M event in Seattle. She clocked the fastest time thus far in the country with a run of 8:56.72, beating the time of 9:15.00 needed for an automatic qualification. Kipyego's time resets the indoor school record that was previously 9:23.03, set by Leigh Daniel in 2000. The mark also became a record at the Dempsey Indoor facility, beating the previous time of 9:00.27 set in 2004.
In the same heat of the 3000M, teammate Irene Kimaiyo notched her first automatic mark of the indoor season, as she provisionally qualified last week in the mile. Kimaiyo ran a new personal best time of 9:12.75 to finish sixth in the event.
Adding to the strong weekend for the Tech men's team was Kevin Chelimo, as he qualified with a provisional mark in the 3000M. His time of 8:00.48 finished him in third place.
Asia Diaz set a new personal best in the women's mile, as she ran a time of 5:00.09, beating her previous best of 5:05.94.
Returning All-American Zach Glavash just missed his first qualifying mark of the season in the 800M, finishing with a run of 1:49.91. The 800M NCAA provisional mark is a time of 1:49.90.
Next week the teams will return home to host the Texas Tech Open on February 3rd. For complete coverage of the men's and women's Red Raider squads, please visit www.texastech.com.
