The Raiders have a 9-8 edge when the teams have played in Lubbock. The Sooners have a 14-5 margin when the teams have played in Norman. OU holds a 2-1 lead on neutral courts. The Sooners have won the previous two games ... in Norman 60-48 (01/21/06) and in Lubbock 71-70 (02/20/06).
Martin Zeno registered his first double-double of the season after scoring 22 points and grabbing a game-leading eleven rebounds on New Year's Day. Jarrius Jackson also scored 22 points and made 5-of-8 three-point attempts against the Lobos. Charlie Burgess added 13 points for the Raiders.
The Red Raiders feature three players averaging double-figures for the season. Jarrius Jackson's 21.4 points per game is third in the Big 12. Martin Zeno's 16.8 points per game ranks seventh in the conference. Junior Charlie Burgess adds 10.5 points per game for the Raiders.
Texas Tech's Bob Knight is now the winningest coach in NCAA men's basketball history with Tech's 70-68 win over New Mexico on New Year's Day at the United Spirit Arena. The festivities began with the playing of Frank Sinatra's "My Way." The post-game ceremony featured Chancellor Kent Hance, President Jon Whitmore, Big 12 Associate Commissioner John Underwood, Athletic Director Gerald Myers, quotes from former players (Isiah Thomas, Randy Wittman, and Mike Woodson), plus video messages from Jim Haney (NABC), Rick Barnes (Texas), Mike Krzyzweski (Duke), Dick Vitale (ESPN), and Dean Smith (UNC). Jarrius Jackson and Martin Zeno spoke on behalf of their history-making 2006-2007 teammates. A new banner marking Coach Knight's 880th win was unfurled to the sold-out USA crowd. Confetti cannons added red and black atmosphere to the arena on two occasions. The celebration closed with Coach Knight at the microphone as "My Way" continued playing. Texas Tech provided complete coverage of Bob Knight's post-game press conference via satellite.
For each game this season, Steve Dale will call the courtside action along with Ted Chidester as analyst on the Texas Tech Sports Network (KKAM 1340 AM), the flagship station for the Red Raiders.
Texas Tech continues conference play on Monday, January 8, in a 9:00 PM tip-off at Kansas State with national broadcast coverage provided by ESPN.
