The Texas Tech Red Raiders travel to Manhattan, Kansas for their game against the Kansas State Wildcats on ESPN's "Big Monday" telecast. Ron Franklin will call the play-by-play and Fran Fraschilla will provide the game analysis. Holly Rowe will be the sideline reporter. Tip-off is at 9 PM.
The Red Raiders (12-4, 1-0) and the Wildcats (10-5, 0-1) began their series on December 6, 1955. After twenty meetings, the series is tied, 10-10. Texas Tech has won the four previous meetings. On their last trip to Manhattan (01/12/05), the Texas Tech traveling party was grounded enroute due to inclement weather, rented vans to reach their destination, and had their pre-game meal at the Golden Corral.
After a 10-minute delay, the game got underway with KSU holding a four-point halftime lead (42-38). In the second half, the teams were tied for the sixth time at 76 points each with 41 seconds remaining in the game. Tech's Curtis Marshall hit a three-pointer with two seconds on the clock to give the Red Raiders a 79-76 win. Last season, Texas Tech won at home (70-56) and in the opening round of the Big 12 Championship (73-65).
Texas Tech opened conference play with a 68-54 win over Oklahoma at the United Spirit Arena on Saturday, January 6. For the second time this season, Martin Zeno paced the Red Raider scoring attack with 17 points. Jarrius Jackson scored 14 points and has been in double figures each game this season. Jay has scored 20 or more points in 11 games this season. Jon Plefka added 12 points coming off the bench and Charlie Burgess added 11 points -- the eighth time this season he has been in double figures.
The Red Raiders feature three players averaging double-figures for the season. Jarrius Jackson's 20.9 points per game is third in the Big 12. Martin Zeno's 16.8 points per game ranks seventh in the conference. Junior Charlie Burgess adds 10.5 points per game for the Raiders.
Texas Tech's Bob Knight is now the winningest coach in NCAA men's basketball history with Tech's 70-68 win over New Mexico on New Year's Day at the United Spirit Arena. The festivities began with the playing of Frank Sinatra's "My Way." The post-game ceremony featured Chancellor Kent Hance, President Jon Whitmore, Big 12 Associate Commissioner John Underwood, Athletic Director Gerald Myers, quotes from former players (Isiah Thomas, Randy Wittman, and Mike Woodson), plus video messages from Jim Haney (NABC), Rick Barnes (Texas), Mike Krzyzweski (Duke), Dick Vitale (ESPN), and Dean Smith (UNC). Jarrius Jackson and Martin Zeno spoke on behalf of their history-making 2006-2007 teammates. A new banner marking Coach Knight's 880th win was unfurled to the sold-out USA crowd. Confetti cannons added red and black atmosphere to the arena on two occasions. The celebration closed with Coach Knight at the microphone as "My Way" continued playing. Texas Tech provided complete coverage of Bob Knight's post-game press conference via satellite.
For each game this season, Steve Dale will call the courtside action along with Ted Chidester as analyst on the Texas Tech Sports Network. Monday night's game in Manhattan will air on KQBR-FM (99.5) and KFYO-AM (790).
Texas Tech continues conference play on Saturday, January 13 in a 3:00 PM tip-off at Baylor with telecast coverage provided by ESPN Plus.
