SPRING, Texas - Day two of the Spring Klein College Classic in Spring, Texas concluded with a tie and a loss for Texas Tech softball. The Red Raiders played to a 6-6 deadlock with perennial-Top 25 Louisiana Lafayette in the morning contest and dropped a tough 6-1 decision at the hands of Southern Mississippi in the afternoon.
Once again official stats were not available for the games, because fall action is not officially recognized by the NCAA. Jaimee Stinson led the way for Tech against the Ragin' Cajuns by going 2-3 with a homer and an RBI, while Jennifer Corkin went 2-3 with a pair of singles against the Golden Eagles.
UL Lafayette got on the board first in the morning game, before Stinson evened things up with a deep shot to left center. The Ragin' Cajuns responded with a pair of runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead.
The Red Raiders offense came alive with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Megan Shupp started the rally by reaching on a hit by pitch. Whitney Riley and Stinson followed with singles to load the bases. Robyn Wike walked to bring in Shupp for the first run and Jennifer Bowers followed with a sacrifice fly to center plate the second run. Danielle Matthews followed with an RBI single and came around to score the fourth run on a UL Lafayette error. Tech led 6-3 after four.
The Red Raiders' lead was short lived, however, as the Ragin' Cajuns scored three in the top of the fifth to even the score at 6 apiece. Neither team could manage a run the final two innings, and it ended in a deadlock. Extra innings are not played in fall games.
Game two of the day was almost all Golden Eagles. Southern Miss. jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead and increased it to 6-0 after three. Tech had no answer. It managed to place runners on sporadically through the next three innings but could not managed to bring them across. The Red Raiders finally broke through to plate their only run of the game in the seventh. Jennifer Corkin singled and was pinch ran for by Jennifer Krauss, who came across on a fielders choice from Bowers.
Tye Coats, Sarah Losleben and Ashly Jacobs all saw action in the circle for Tech. Jacobs had a solid showing in relief against UL Lafayette. The Houston, Texas (Cypress Creek High School), native stymied the Ragin' Cajuns by allowing just one hit in two and two-thirds innings of work.
The Red Raiders will conclude the weekend tomorrow morning with a pair of games. They will battle Texas State at 9:45 a.m. before facing Blinn College at 11:45. From there, the team will enjoy a long bus ride back to Lubbock.
