MANHATTAN, Kan. - Texas Tech fell victim to a season-best hitting night from No. 14 Kansas State and fell 3-0 (22-30, 15-30 and 14-30) Wednesday night in Manhattan, Kan.
With the setback, Tech fell to 7-12 and 1-9 in conference play. KSU, meanwhile, improved to 15-5 and 7-3 overall.
After holding a tough No. 23 Oklahoma team to just .169 hitting last week, the Tech defense ran smack into a smoldering hitting attack from KSU. The Wildcats hit a season-high .449 en route to their seventh home win of the season.
Amy Gandy and Alicia Ostmeyer led the way for the Red Raiders with six kills apiece. Gandy also recorded three blocks, while Michelle Flores and Brandi Hood added five kills and one block each. Setter Kourtney Dunnam picked up 20 assists in her second career match.
Hot hitting told the story in the first game. The Wildcats came out blazing and grabbed an early 10-6 lead. They continued the attack and eventually built a 15-6 advantage. Gandy had a couple of big blocks to suppress KSU and fuel a late Tech rally that cut the deficit to four at 24-20. It would not be enough to douse the Wildcats' hot hand, however, as they rode .439 hitting to take game one 30-22.
KSU kept its hot hand going into game two and took a 15-6 advantage almost midway through. The Red Raiders had scattered moments of success, but they were not enough to mount any series run against a tough Wildcat defense. KSU took the game 30-15.
Coming out of the locker room, the Red Raiders looked capture the momentum. They held strong early against the nation's 14th ranked team and were within two points early. The Wildcats responded quickly and raced ahead to a 20-7 lead. Tech was never able to get on track from there and fell 30-14.
Natalya Korobkova paced KSU with 16 kills on .500 hitting. Stacey Spiegelberg led the Wildcat offense with a match-best 46 assists.
The Red Raiders will return to the friendly confines of the United Spirit Arena Saturday night when they play host to in-state foe Texas A&M. First serve is set for 7 p.m. CST.
