Lady Raider Tennis Begins Big 12 Play

LUBBOCK, Texas -Taking a weekend off after hosting five matches, the No. 51 Texas Tech women's tennis team returns to the courts rested and ready to kick off conference play. The team hosts No. 53 Colorado on Saturday, Feb. 17, at 5 p.m. and Colorado State on Sunday, Feb. 18, at 9 a.m. at the Lubbock Country Club.
Tech sits 3-2 on the season suffering 4-3 losses to both No. 42 Oregon and No. 41 New Mexico. The team struggled to secure the doubles point in both losses, which in turn came back to haunt the overall match results. In the win column, Tech notched in a few in their favor over ranked Alabama, UTEP and Prairie View A&M. The team's singles action has continued to improve with both Janet Durham and Samantha van der Drift holding undefeated records.
Colorado and Colorado State's strength on the court boasts from their doubles competition, with both teams knocking off some top ranked doubles duos this season. Head Coach Cari Groce has been trying to find a secure set of doubles as she has been mixing and matching new and veteran players in the No. 2 and 3 spots. One of the successful pairings includes junior Durham and sophomore van der Drift who are 3-0 in doubles action this season.
Colorado comes to Lubbock leading the series between the two teams 9-3, with a 5-2 win last season over the Lady Raiders. The Buffaloes are 3-2 on the season after also suffering a loss Oregon. Colorado State enters Sunday's match with a 1-2 record, losing their last match 4-3 to No. 65 Nebraska. Tech leads the series over Colorado State 5-1.
