MONTGOMERY, Ala. - With their season in full swing, the Texas Tech men's tennis team faced some adversity at the annual Blue Gray Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Alabama. The team went 1-2 on the weekend, and hold a 9-5 overall record heading into conference play.
Playing without their No. 1 Bojan Szumanski, who went down against Virginia Commonwealth with an ankle injury, Tech managed to advance to the semifinals in the consolation bracket of the tournament. In addition to Szumanski, the Red Raiders were forced to play without their No. 5 Michael Breler as he sat out the weekend because of illness.
Tech entered the match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi leading the series 4-1. The Raiders had to make some adjustments and move players into new positions in order to make up for the loss of their two top singles players. Unfortunately, the Islanders came out strong and capitalized on the Raiders at their moment of weakness.
"I'm really proud of the team's fight this weekend," said head Coach Tim Siegel. "To be so shorthanded and not playing with Michael and Bojan really affected us. We played two really good teams, but now we need to get healthy and ready for Nebraska next weekend."
Next up the Raiders will open conference play as they face the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln, Neb. For more information and complete results, visit www.texastech.com.
