Tempe, Ariz. - Danielle Lawrie (11-1) used a combination of breaking pitches, including a very effective rise ball, as No. 10 Washington beat Texas Tech, 1-0, in the first game of the Big 12/Pac-10 Challenge. Her counterpart, Red Raiders' freshman Ashly Jacobs, also pitched well, holding the Huskies to four hits and an unearned run.
The Huskies scored in the first as Ashley Charters singled to lead off the game, and on a one-out sacrifice attempt, Tech third baseman Natalie Kula's errant throw went to the wall in right center field, allowing Charters to score instead of the intended put out at second base.
Only Jennifer Corkin could manage a single off of Lawrie (in the top of the sixth) as Texas Tech struggled with the sophomore pitcher's stuff as she struck out 15 Red Raiders.
Texas Tech will face No. 6 Arizona State in the second game of the day for the Red Raiders, which will begin at approximately 8:30 p.m. (CT).
