Tech Turns Back The Clock For KU Weekend
It's that time of year again. The Red Raiders will turn back the clock this weekend as Texas Tech plays host to the Kansas Jayhawks in a three-game Big 12 series at Dan Law Field.
Friday and Sunday's games have been designated as "Turn Back The Clock Night" and the Red Raiders will wear vintage uniforms. The vintage uniforms are new this season and will be a completely different style than Tech has worn in the past. The series gets underway at 6:30 p.m. on Friday evening and the game will be televised nationally on Fox College Sports. The weekend continues at 2 p.m. on Saturday and wraps up at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
Texas Tech (22-16; 5-9) and Kansas (19-22; 5-10) enter the weekend trying to stay out of the Big 12 cellar as both teams currently occupy the ninth and 10th spots respectively. Only three games currently separate Texas Tech from a third place standing in the Big 12 so the weekend series against the Jayhawks may be the most crucial of the season. Tech's last series win over Kansas was a three-game sweep in Lawrence back in 2004. The Red Raiders dropped the series (1-2) last season in Lawrence and split a rain-shortened series at Dan Law Field in 2005.
The Red Raiders are currently on a three-game losing skid after being swept at No. 6 Texas over the weekend. Tech was scheduled to play New Mexico and the College of the Southwest this weekend but weather played havoc on both of those games. Tech will now face College of the Southwest on Monday afternoon but a makeup date with New Mexico has not been announced.
Tickets for all three games are available for purchase through the Texas Tech Athletics Ticket Office.
A Look At Kansas
The Kansas Jayhawks make the trip to Lubbock with a 19-23 overall record and a 5-10 mark in Big 12 play. The Jayhawks dropped a 2-1 decision on Wednesday night at Wichita State and have lost eight of their last 11 contests. Kansas, the defending Big 12 Tournament Champion, is coached by Ritch Price who is in his fifth season in Lawrence.
Offensively, the Jayhawks come into the series against Texas Tech with similar numbers as the Red Raiders. Kansas has a team batting average of .281 along with 36 home runs, 12 triples and 89 doubles. John Allman leads the squad with a .340 average and is third on the team with 30 RBIs. Ryne Price is the power hitter with a team-high eight home runs including a walk off home run last week against Baylor.
On the mound, Kansas has a 4.91 staff ERA and is led by closer Paul Smyth who has a 1.77 ERA through 23 relief appearances. He is 3-3 on the year with five saves. Saturday's scheduled starter, Zach Ashwood, has been the most consistent for the Jayhawks this season as he is 3-3 in 12 appearances (10 starts).
Texas Tech-Kansas Series
Friday night's series opener against Kansas will mark the 33rd meeting between the two schools. Texas Tech leads the all-time series 22-10 and is 10-4 against Kansas in games played at Dan Law Field. Since the start of the 21st Century, the Red Raiders are 13-7 against the Jayhawks but have not won a series against them since the 2004 season. Kansas won the series last year in Lawrence, 2-1.
Looking Ahead
Friday night's game against Kansas will signal the start of an eight game stretch over 10 days for the Red Raiders. Tech will play five games in five straight days starting on Friday as Tech will face Kansas over the weekend and College of the Southwest and TCU on Monday and Tuesday. Following the midweek trip to TCU, the Red Raiders will head to Missouri on Thursday and will open up a three-game series in Columbia against the Tigers on April 27.
