LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's tennis team will wrap up their regular season today against the No. 28 Oklahoma Sooners at 2 p.m. in Kansas City, Mo. Coming off a huge 4-3 upset over Oklahoma State on Sunday, the Red Raiders look to secure a number four seed heading into the Big 12 Tennis Championships.
As a result of last Friday's postponement due to windy conditions, the Red Raiders were left with no other choice but to hand over their home court advantage and play it out on neutral territory. According to the NCAA rulebook, if wind conditions fall above 20 mph a team can opt to move indoors, if courts are available, or resume play at a future date.
With the conference championships just one day away, Tech will have to prove themselves once again against a competitive Sooner team. Last season the Raiders pulled out a 4-3 win over the OU in Norman, tying the series between the two teams at 12 all. OU's young roster includes freshman standouts, No. 60 Vaclav Kucera and No. 117 Andrei Daescu.
The Raiders also moved up in the rankings as Bojan Szumanski improved to 37 and senior No. 2 player Dimitrio Martinez found himself with his highest ranking of the season of 79. After an 8-4 win over Oklahoma State's No. 40 pair of Daniel Byrnes and Oleksandr Nedovyesov, Tech's No. 1 duo of Szumanski and Christian Rojmar advanced to No. 45 nationally.
Another Tech hard-hitter to watch for is Sinisa Markovic as he looks to end his sophomore campaign with a perfect conference record, currently sitting 5-0 in Big 12, 14-2 in dual matches. Markovic's doubles partner Michael Breler is still on the hunt for his first conference win, as Christian Rojmar and Milos Kustudija round out No. 5 and 6 positions, respectively.
The 2007 Big 12 Tennis Championships will begin Fri., April 27, in Kansas City, Mo., returning to the Plaza Tennis Courts for third time in conference history. Live updates and results will be available at http://kuathletics.cstv.com/sports/w-tennis/spec-rel/032707aaq.html.
