Red Raiders Make Trip to Oklahoma for Susie Maxwell

LUBBOCK, Texas - In their final regular season tournament before heading into the Big 12 Championships, the Texas Tech women's golf team will compete at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman, Okla.
The Red Raiders are returning to the Oklahoma-hosted event after a year absence. Prior to that, Tech competed in the Susie Maxwell seven-consecutive years. During that stretch the Red Raiders finished no worse than seventh and fifth or better six of the years. The team's top scores were in 2001 when Tech finished second after turning in 307-292-303--902.
Before that seven-year stretch, Tech had four years of solid finishes in the Susie Maxwell. In 1993, the Red Raiders finished third of 11, while placing second in 1997. In spring 1994 and 1996, Tech won the title at the event that hosted 12 programs each year. In 1994, the squad finished with rounds of 316-317-316--949, while in 1996 they scored 318-316-302--936 to win.
The 18-team field for this year's tournament will begin play on Sun., April 8th with the first two rounds for the Jimmie Austin University of Oklahoma Golf Course. The final round will be on Mon., April 9th, with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.

ON THE COURSE
The 2007 Susie Maxwell Berning Classic will take place on OU's golf course, the Jimmie Austin University of Oklahoma Golf Course. The par 72, 6,013 yard course originally opened in 1951, with a redesign effort opening in 1996. The course has played host to a number of notable tournaments, including the 1997 NCAA Regionals, 1997 Oklahoma State Amateur, and the 1998 Big 12 Women's Championships. The Jimmie Austin will also host the 2009 USGA Amateur Public Links National Championship.
THE COMPETITION
Eighteen squads will take part in the annual Susie Maxell Berning Classic, including five Big 12 conference members. The top-ranked team in the field is No. 24 Arkansas, marking one of three teams listed in the Golfweek/Sagarin top 50. The other two programs are No. 40 Baylor and No. 44 SMU.
Other teams in the field and their rankings are as follows: No. 70 Arkansas-Little Rock, No. 79 Kansas, No. 76 Kansas State, No. 58 New Mexico State, No. 118 North Texas, No. 60 Oklahoma, No. 104 Oral Roberts, No. 81 Texas Tech, No. 82 Tulsa, No. 80 UTEP, No. 131 Wichita State and No. 89 Wisconsin. Other schools are Redlands Community College, Division II's No. 30 Cameron and the NAIA's No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City.
Texas Tech has faced 13 of the 17 teams in the previous nine tournaments during the season. The Red Raiders have earned a 10-17 record against the teams they have faced, making for a .370 percentage. Tech has winning records against Kansas, Kansas State, North Texas and Redlands CC, and will be facing Arkansas, Cameron, Oklahoma City and Wichita State for the first time.

TUCSON, Ariz. - After three rounds of play at the MountainView Collegiate in Tuscson, Ariz., the Texas Tech women's golf team finished in 12th place despite shooting their third-lowest 54-hole score. The Red Raiders finished with rounds of 304-293-296--893, 29-over-par. The team's second-round score of 293 ties for the fifth lowest in school history.
Leading all Red Raiders was freshman Rosalyn Kim, marking her third time to fire the lowest scores on the team this season. Kim finished the MountainView in a tie for 28th after turning in rounds of 75-71-75--221, 5-over-par.
Ulrika Van Niekerk finished two shots behind with scores of 74-76-73--223 to tie for 41st. Sophomore Megan Dowdy tied for 47th with rounds of 76-76-72--224. Finishing tied for 72nd was Gloriana Soto who turned in 80-70-81--231. Melissa Fahey had rounds of 79-77-76--232 to tie for 75th.
Conference member Nebraska took the team title at the event as they fired scores of 287-285-294--866. Indiana's Elaine Harris titled the event individually as she finished with rounds of 70-69-70--209.
The Red Raiders will next compete in their final regular tournament before taking on the conference at the Big 12 Championships. The Susie Maxwell Classic from Norman, Okla., will take place on April 8-9. For complete coverage of the event, please visit www.texastech.com.
JUST LAST YEAR
Texas Tech did not compete in last year's edition of the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in which Oklahoma State took the title. The Cowgirls won with scores of 283-284-300--867 to win by 25 shots. The remaining Big 12 schools finished as follows: Texas third, Nebraska fourth, Kansas State fifth, Oklahoma sixth, Colorado eighth, Kansas tied for ninth and Baylor finished 11th.
BIG 12 RANKINGS
Following the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic, Texas Tech will compete in the Big 12 Championships in Waco, Texas. The event will take place on April 16 with the conclusion on April 18.
Two Big 12 programs are listed among the top 25 squads in the nation according to the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. Oklahoma State sits atop the conference schools with an eighth-place ranking, while Texas A&M is second in the Big 12 ranked 14th. The only other two schools in the top 50 are Baylor at No. 40 and Missouri at No. 49.
Nebraska is the fifth-highest ranked squad at No. 53 followed by No. 59 Colorado, No. 60 Oklahoma, No. 75 Iowa State, No. 76 Kansas State, No. 77 Texas, No. 79 Kansas and Tech sits at No. 81.
