LUBBOCK, Texas - After sitting out last season, the Texas Tech men's tennis team returns to the NCAA Tennis Championships facing No. 24-ranked Virginia Commonwealth in the first round of the UCLA regional. The No. 36 Red Raiders and Rams were placed in the bracket with host No. 9 UCLA and No. 66 UNLV. Play begins on Fri., May 11 in Los Angeles.
Tech met VCU earlier this season at the Blue-Gray College Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala., falling 4-1. The Raiders No. 1 player Bojan Szumanski was forced to retire his match due to an ankle injury early in the match, and Tech's No. 4 clutch-player Michael Breler also sat out due to illness.
"It's exciting to be going to UCLA," exclaimed head coach Tim Siegel. "We had a chance to face VCU earlier this season, and I have a lot of respect for them as they are a very good team. This is obviously a very tough region to be playing VCU first round, but our guys are really excited to be back in the tournament, and we have some work to do before we head to Los Angeles."
