Chelimo Takes Big 12 10000M Title on Opening Day

LINCOLN, Neb. - Senior Kevin Chelimo raced to the crown in the men's 10000M to conclude the first day's action at the Big 12 Championships Friday. The victory marks the Kabarnat, Kenya, native's first conference title, as he finished the 25 laps in 30:34.43. The win is Texas Tech's first male 10000M conference victory and 15th overall individual title on the men's side.
The Red Raiders sophomore duo of D'Andra Carter and Patience Knight went three-four in the women's discus. Carter, finishing third for six Tech points, had a top distance of 175'-8". Knight had her top mark of the season by nearly 20 feet as she threw for 171'-6" to finish fourth. Knight's mark qualifies her for the NCAA Midwest Regional in two weeks in Des Moines, Iowa.
Finishing fifth in the women's 10000M was senior Violet Chemakwila, earning four points to complete the women's action on the night. The Mt. Elgon, Kenya, native ran a time of 36:34.39, while Iowa State's Lisa Koll took the title after clocking 35:36.60.
Junior Julianne Kennedy completed the first day of action in the women's heptathlon in second behind Ashley Selig of Nebraska. The indoor Big 12 pentathlon champion has 3275 points and finished with a personal best in the shot put by over two feet. Kennedy threw 41'-8" in the shot and also had marks of 14.37 in the 100M hurdles, 5'-6.5" in the high jump and a run of 25.98 in the 200M.
The women's heptathlon will continue on Saturday with a 10:30 a.m. start for the long jump. The javelin and the 800M will follow and conclude the competition.
The Tech women finished the first day's action ahead of the conference with 15 points after two events; host Nebraska, Iowa State and Missouri are in second with 10 points. On the men's side, Texas leads with 19 points, with Kansas in second after earning 11 points. Chelimo's victory earned Tech 10 points to put them in third.
The Big 12 Championships in Lincoln, Neb., will continue on Saturday with action starting at 9 a.m. with the hammer throw for the men's decathlon.
