DES MOINES, Iowa - On the final day of NCAA Midwest Regional action, Texas Tech senior hurdlers Marlon Odom and Bryan Scott nabbed regional titles in their respective events. Odom crossed the finish line first during the 110M hurdles with a regional record of 13.54. Scott was crowned the 400M hurdle champion with a mark of 50.03. Seven additional Red Raiders earned their spot to the NCAA Championships, which are set for June 6-9 in Sacramento, Calif.
Three-time All-American Odom entered Saturday's 110M hurdle final with a 13.66, the top-time in the preliminary heats. During the finals, the three-time Big 12 champion broke the previous Midwest Regional record of 13.63 set in 2003 by Chris Pinnock of Texas A&M. Odom becomes one of only two three-time regional champions, as he titled the event in 2005 and 2006. The mark breaks the wind-legal school record, which Odom set earlier this season with a time of 13.56 at the Drake Relays, also held at Drake Stadium.
In the same race, freshman Omo Osaghae had a sixth-place finish, one place outside of an automatic trip to the nationals. The Lubbock native ran a time of 13.99, tying his personal best from the Big 12 Championship finals.
Lubbock-native Scott won his second regional title on Saturday in the men's 400M hurdles with a time of 50.03. The 2006 All-American won the 2005 regional and recently won his third Big 12 title in the hurdles. The senior Red Raider will be making his fourth trip to the NCAA Championships as a 400M hurdle qualifier.
"I'm blessed and happy with the win and the title," Scott said. "I'm not really happy with the time, but I'll take the win. Winning regionals is not the ultimate goal though. The goals are to come at nationals."
With his first-career national qualification, sophomore Jansen Hyde finished fourth in the 400M hurdles. Hyde ran his second-best time as he clocked a 50.88.
Zach Glavash, who ran a time of 1:47.89 during the 800M prelims on Friday, finished in second during Saturday's finals with a time of 1:48.39. The standing Big 12 champion earned his first outdoor national qualification with the Red Raiders with the second-place run. His regional time sits as his third-best career mark.
Also finishing as a runner-up was redshirt freshman Ozie Okolie in the women's hammer throw. The current school-record holder again reset the mark with her personal best throw of 199'-11" on Saturday. She threw for 193'-9" at the Big 12 Championship to place third. Okolie is qualifying for her first national trip with the second-place finish.
Qualifying in the men's javelin was Big 12 champion Jamie Robinson, as he took fourth place. The senior Red Raider threw for 210'-10", his fourth-best toss. The national qualification marks the second-consecutive year that Robinson will be competing at nationals in the javelin. He finished fifth at last year's regionals and placed 25th at the championships.
Two of the Tech women's pole vaulters qualified on Saturday, finishing fourth and fifth. Junior Kelley Schulz took fourth place after clearing a height of 13'-3.75". The mark sits as Schulz' second-best clearance and her top of the season. Amanda Alley finished in fifth in a jumpoff with Kansas' Kate Sultanova. Alley also cleared 13'-3.75", her personal best by two inches. Schulz is qualifying for her third national meet, while Alley will be competing in her first.
Discus thrower D'Andra Carter will be making her second trip to the season's final competition as she placed fourth in the women's discus. The Red Oak, Texas, native threw for 173'-5". Carter qualified during 2006 in the discus and eventually placed 13th at the national meet.
In the men's triple jump, freshman Anthony Flemons finished in eighth place with a jump of 50'-9.25". The Childress, Texas, native still has a chance of qualifying as he holds the nation's seventh-best mark with 52'-9.25" from the Drake Relays and finished 12th or better at the regional level.
Freshman Justin Turner missed scoring position as he took ninth place with a clearance of 6'-11". The height is Turner's new personal best, as he previously cleared 6'-10.75" at the UTEP Invitational.
The Oklahoma men added a regional title to their Big 12 Championship crown as they won with 75.33 points. Tech finished in third with 58 points, while Nebraska was runner-up with 60. For the women, Texas A&M also doubled with a regional and conference title as they finished with 99 points. Texas took second with 67 points, Nebraska third with 55 and Tech was fourth with 43 points.
