LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech offensive tackle Rylan Reed (Dallas, Texas/Crossett [Ark.]) set a new school record Monday by bench pressing 565 pounds during a max session. The junior shattered the old mark by 15 pounds.
Former offensive guard Manny Ramirez, now in his first season with the Detroit Lions, set the previous mark of 550 last year. Additionally, Reed squatted 640 pounds, 60 shy of the record of 700 set by former defensive tackle Ken Scott.
Reed, a former pitcher in the Chicago White Sox organization, enrolled at Tech in 2005 after four seasons in the minor leagues. He began his career at Texas Tech as a 260-pound tight end and has grown to his current height and weight of 6-foot-7 and 315 pounds. Reed is currently listed as the starter at right tackle entering fall drills.
