Athens, Georgia - In the first game under new head coach Tom Stone, the Tech soccer team fell to Georgia 4-1 Friday night in game one of the Georgia Nike Invitational.
Carrie Patterson, Rachel Barstow, Traci Dreesen and Marah Falle led the Bulldogs with a goal each.
The Red Raiders, who were held scoreless through the first half, scored on an unassisted Priscilla Esquivel goal in the 72nd minute.
The Bulldogs had nine shots on goal compared to Tech's seven.
Tech was expected to arrive in Atlanta last night, but due to mechanical and weather issues, the team was forced to stay in Dallas Thurs. night and catch a morning flight Friday. Even with these circumstances, Stone said he was still pleased with his team, especially Esquivel.
"Giving the fact that we landed in Atlanta about 1:30 today, then took an hour-and-half bus ride to Athens, I thought we had our legs the first 30 minutes," Stone said. "We should have been up 2-1, but their goalkeeper made two awesome saves. You have to give Georgia a lot of credit. For us, this is our first real test. We will take bits and pieces from this and move on."
The Red Raiders retake the field Sunday at 10 a.m. CDT to take on Vanderbilt in the second game of the Georgia Nike Invitational.
