Athens, Georgia - In the final match of the Georgia Nike Invitational, the Tech soccer team fell to SEC power Vanderbilt 1-0 at Turner Sports Complex.
In his second game with the Red Raiders, head coach Tom Stone felt his team had plenty of opportunities to control the match, but failed to do so against a quality team.
"There was definitely progress from Friday to Sunday," Stone said. "We had our legs back, and out-shot and out-fouled Vanderbilt. Unfortunately, we gave up one on the other end, and that was the difference. Vanderbilt had been to the NCAA Tournament three years in a row, but we were definitely the aggressor. It is progress, but not enough progress, yet. We were definitely disappointed with the result given the way we played."
The Red Raiders had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but a Brittney Harrison shot attempt went straight to the Commodore goalkeeper.
Statistically, Tech out-shot Vanderbilt 18 to 16 with five corner kicks, while holding the Commodores to zero.
The Red Raiders retake the field Wed., Sept. 5 in San Marcos, Texas, to take on Texas State in a 7 p.m. start time. The home opener is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Fri., Sept.7 against Stephen F. Austin at R.P. Fuller Stadium.
