LUBBOCK, Texas - Hitting problems early and late cost Texas Tech volleyball in a 3-0 (27-30, 24-30 and 25-30) defeat at the hands of the Kansas Jayhawks Saturday afternoon in Lawrence, Kan.
After hitting .283 against a tough Texas A&M team Wednesday, the Red Raiders' offense struggled early and late against the Jayhawks. It proved to be the difference, as Tech fell to 7-6 on the season and 1-3 in conference play. With the win, Kansas improved to 9-5 and 2-2 on the year.
Three Tech players knocked down double-digit kills on the afternoon, led by 11 from senior Alicia Ostmeyer. Amy Gandy picked up her seventh double-double of the season with 10 kills and 13 digs, while Michelle Flores had 10 kills to mark the 11th match this season the junior has knocked down at double-digit kills. Hutchinson, Kan., native Brandi Hood led the Red Raider defense with seven blocks, while sophomore Jenn Harrell finished with 14 digs.
Game one was highlighted by several runs from both squads. The Jayhawks came out of the gate quick and seized the early 6-2 lead. The Red Raiders came back to even the score at eight, before Kansas took control to eventually go up 21-17. Tech fought back with a late run, but it was not enough to catch the Jayhawks, who pulled out the 30-27 win.
Early hitting woes and costly errors hurt Tech in game two. Kansas took advantage of early Red Raider struggles to go ahead 16-9 part way through. Tech made a big surge late in the game, but it was too late. KU took the win 30-24.
The Red Raiders came out the aggressors in game thee and jumped out to an 11-7 lead, before the Jayhawks surged back to go ahead 18-15 midway through. Tech stayed close until late in the game, when KU pulled ahead to claim the 30-25 win and finish the sweep.
Kansas' Emily Brown picked up a triple-double with 10 kills, 25 assists and 11 digs to lead three Jayhawks that had double-digit kills. Karina Garlington led the way with 14 kills.
The Red Raiders will be back in the United Spirit Arena next week, when they play host to No. 7 Texas Wednesday and Iowa State on Saturday. First serve for Wednesday's match is set for 7 p.m., while Saturday's contest will begin at 1 p.m.
