LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech volleyball played another hard-fought contest Saturday afternoon, but the Red Raiders came up short at the hands of Iowa State 3-1 (15-30, 25-30, 30-28 and 17-30) in the United Spirit Arena.
With the loss, Tech fell to 7-8 overall and 1-5 in Big 12 play. The Cyclones improved to 10-5, 4-1 in conference.
After the Red Raiders defense held one of the Big 12's leading hitters, Texas' Juliann Faucette, to just .088 hitting on Wednesday, Tech struggled against ISU's Erin Boeve. The 2006 All-American Honorable Mention blistered the Red Raiders with 17 kills on .455 hitting. The Cyclones' conference-leading block attack made their impression on the match by knocking down 21 blocks, compared to just four from Tech.
Alicia Ostmeyer led the Red Raiders with 11 kills on a respectable .333 hitting clip. Amy Gandy added eight kills to go with 12 digs, while Brandi Hood had eight kills and two blocks. Emily Ziegler finished with a nice line of 41 assists, eight digs, four kills and two blocks. Sophomore Jenn Harrell picked up 20 digs from her libero position.
ISU came out the aggressor in game one and jumped out to a 9-3 lead. Tech struggled to recapture the momentum, as the Cyclones cruised to the 15-30 win. Game two was a different story, however, as the Red Raiders jumped to a 6-4 lead early after a kill from Hood. ISU fought back to even things up before the Red Raiders went on a run to take the 10-7 lead. Both squads battled back and forth and found themselves deadlocked at 22 late in the game. The Cyclones caught fire and raced on to the 25-30 win.
The Red Raiders came out of the locker room and took the momentum early, as they took a 9-5 lead after a series of ISU miscues. Tech went on to 16-11 lead midway through after a kill from freshman Becca Baldwin. The Cyclones fought back with a couple of small runs late to cut the Red Raider advantage to two, but Tech held strong and closed out the 30-28 win on a Ziegler kill.
Game four was all ISU. Tech struggled to capture any type of momentum against a tough Cyclone hitting attack and fell 17-30, as ISU took the 3-1 victory.
Boeve led the Cyclones with 17 kills, while Lauren Cummings added 16. Kaylee Manns dished out a match-high 51 assists for ISU.
The Red Raiders will look to get back on track Wednesday when travel to Waco to take on in-state foe Baylor. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST.
