LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech's 39-33 win over then-No. 1 Texas has propelled the Red Raiders to their highest rankings in program history, including a No. 2 ranking in the latest BCS standings, released Sunday afternoon. Tech also is No. 2 and No. 3 in the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls.
The rankings in the AP and coaches polls are the highest in the history of the Texas Tech program. The previous high was last week's No. 5 ranking in the coaches poll and a three-week stretch at No. 5 in the AP poll in 1976.
Texas Tech received 12 first-place votes in the AP poll and six in the coaches. Alabama sits atop each poll and is .037 ahead of the Red Raiders in the BCS standings, while Penn State is ahead of Tech in the coaches poll by 28 points and trails Tech by only three in the AP.
With the loss to the Red Raiders, Texas dropped to fifth and seventh in the AP and coaches polls, but slid only to fourth in the BCS. Oklahoma State is ninth in the BCS and eighth in the other two polls, while Oklahoma sixth in the BCS standings.
Texas Tech and No. 8 Oklahoma State will meet at 7 p.m. Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock. The game will air as part of a split national broadcast on ABC alongside USC-California.
