LUBBOCK, Texas - Improvements to the Rocky Johnson Field, begun last year with a complete renovation to the field surfaces, dugouts and bullpen areas, continue through the fall and winter with the building of new outdoor hitting tunnels which is scheduled to begin next week. The outdoor hitting tunnels should be ready for use by the team when it begins its home season with a doubleheader on March 10 against Big 12 foe Oklahoma.
The majority of the project features the building of a softball-only complex, pictured in architectural renderings above, which will house locker rooms, indoor hitting bays, work out areas, team rooms, equipment areas, laundry facilities and coaches offices.
"We're extremely excited that these renderings can now be shared with our team and our fans. The future of Texas Tech softball will be so greatly enhanced by these improvements," interim head coach Amy Suiter said. "We've been working on this for several years and have already benefitted from the new surfaces and new dugouts and we're looking forward to the new outdoor tunnels for this season. But it will be so exciting for the Red Raiders to move into a completely new team building."
The team facility will be built, with Texas Tech-style architecture inherent in its design, along the outside of the left field fence line and will feature a team-only entrance to the field through the locker room areas. There will be a team room which will feature outfield pavilion style viewing rooms and will be used to help sponsor booster club efforts. Plans for these will be unveiled over the next several months.
"For now, we're just thrilled that the project is moving forward. It's going to be really first-class and we look forward to christening the building prior to the 2010 season," Suiter added.
