LUBBOCK, Texas - With the conclusion of the Fall semester and the 2009 season around the corner, it's time we meet the rest of the newcomers to the Texas Tech softball team. Last, but certainly not least, we introduce Karli Merlich, Skyler Peterson, and Amanda Wagner.
Merlich joins the Red Raiders from Puyallup, Wash., Peterson from Marysville, Wash., and Wagner was born in Austin and played her prep career in Frisco, Texas.
Q&A with Karli, Skyler, and Amanda
What is your favorite thing about Texas Tech?
Karli: My team and my coaches, I just love the environment that I am in.
Skyler: How involved the community is with Texas Tech.
Amanda: I feel like I have a name and face here instead of just being a student identification number. Also, there is a sense of community here and there is no place that I would rather be! I love Tech!
What is your favorite Tech tradition?
Karli: The football games.
Skyler: Carol of Lights.
Amanda: Carol of Lights, hands down.
What are your goals for the upcoming season?
Karli: I want to be able to pitch as well as I can and as often as I can and show people that Tech is the place to be.
Skyler: I want to dominate the Big 12 and reach the WCWS! OK, that sounds maybe really cocky or something, but honestly it's what every athlete really wants to say when asked what do you want for a season. Personally, I want to be an All-American, you have to be able to dream big and see yourself successful so why not set the bar really high?
Amanda: I want to improve on my skills and play to the best of my ability, and of course, WIN!
If you were hosting a recruiting trip to Lubbock, what would you show them?
Karli: The beautiful campus.
Skyler: My biceps! Just kidding, I would show them the amazing campus and I know that would speak for itself.
Amanda: I would try to take them to a football game because I think that is one of the best activities at Tech. There is nothing like being in the student section chanting, surrounded by 55,000 rabid fans.
Tech begins its 2009 campaign on February 6 in Tempe, Ariz. at a tournament hosted by defending national champion, Arizona State. The Red Raiders will face Central Florida and Wagner, which is not named as such for a relative of Amanda's, on Friday. The complete, but still tentative, schedule is now available through the various links of this Web site.
