ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - In a tightly-contested game, one inning proved to be the difference as New Mexico (6-5) scored four runs with two outs in the fifth inning to upend Texas Tech Softball 8-4 Sunday afternoon.
Leah Legler extended her hit streak to six games by going 3-4 to lead a Red Raider offense that put 11 hits on the board against the Lobos. Devin Zaragoza and Montana Patin both finished 2-4 with an RBI, and Whitney Riley added two hits as well. Tye Coats (0-4) picked up the loss in relief.
New Mexico drew the first run of the contest in the bottom of the first and then added another in the second to take a 2-0 advantage. The Red Raiders fought back with a run in the third when Legler came across on a Patin double. After the Lobos put a run across in each of the next two innings, Tech responded with a run in the fourth when Riley came in on a double from Jennifer Bowers. Legler and Zaragoza each scored in the top of the fifth to even the tally at 4-4.
The Lobos responded in a big way in the bottom of the fifth by plating four runs, two of which were unearned, all with two outs. The Red Raiders shut New Mexico out in the bottom of the sixth, but they were unable to get anything in their final two at bats.
Tech will look to bounce back next weekend as it travels to Fullerton, Calif. for the Fullerton Worth Tournament.
