LUBBOCK, Texas - Beginning its season flawless at 3-0, the Texas Tech men's tennis team hits the road for the first of four consecutive weekends. With Las Vegas as their first scheduled stop, the No. 32 Red Raiders are set to face No. 73 San Diego on Feb. 8, and No. 75 UNLV on Sat., Feb. 9.
Last Friday Tech hosted a pair of matches against Lamar and Abilene Christian, with both consisting of only singles play due to inclement weather. The Red Raiders went 11-1 in singles with their only loss of the day at the No. 6 position against Abilene Christian.
The lineup for Tech this season has the potential to be one of the strongest in program history. Senior Bojan Szumanski, ranked top 50 nationally in singles, leads the team at No.1, followed by junior Sinisa Markovic at No. 2, who went undefeated last season in conference play. Positions No. 3 and 4 will feature a pair of experienced newcomers, senior-transfers Lenoir Ramos and Ilya Babinciuc, respectively. Rounding out No. 5 and 6 will be junior veterans Michael Breler and Christian Rojmar.
The Red Raiders have also transformed into a force to be reckoned with in doubles, as Tech boasts two ranked duos with No. 10 Rojmar and Szumanski and No. 11 Breler and Markovic. Tech's No. 3 position has not quite been finalized, as head coach Tim Siegel continues to search for a solid pair to complete his doubles roster.
San Diego began its season with a 5-2 loss to No. 6 USC, but recovered with a 4-3 win over No. 69 Fresno State. Last season UNLV won the 2007 Mountain West Conference and along with Tech advanced to the NCAA Tournament regional in Los Angeles. The Rebels sit 2-1 on the season, boasting a 4-3 series advantage over the Red Raiders. The Toreros also lead the series over Tech, 6-1.
Both matches will be played at noon (CST). For complete results, log on to the men's tennis page at www.texastech.com.
